Lewistown & Reedsville Electric Railway Co.The Life and Times of a Country Trolley LineBy Gordon P. FrederickPublished by Ben Rohrbeck Traction Publications 1003 N. Chester Road West Chester, PA. 19380 Gordon Fredrick always had a fascination with America's many rural trolley lines. After moving to this area, he became a trolley car motorman at the Rockhill Trolley Museum in Huntingdon County, PA. He soon learned that there was a once thriving, honest-to-goodness country railway a mere 30 miles (48 kilometers) away in Lewistown, and became so interested in it, that he decided to write a book on it. Gordon accommodates the interest of three different groups of people in his book: the dyed-in-the-wool traction enthusiasts, long time residents, and finally anyone interested in the history of the economic development of a rural area like Mifflin County. The book is well written and a fun read. Gordan put a lot of effort and research into this book - considering the railway was abandoned almost 70 years ago, he accumulated quite a large amount of facts and photographs on the old L&R. The only complaint is in the delivery of the information. The plastic spiral binding does not hold up well to regular use, and the photographs are rather fuzzy due to the use of uncoated paper. This book was published in 1983 and like The Ol' Hook & Eye is now out of print. It is quite a find if you can pick up a copy at some yard sale or auction in Mifflin County, since it is the only definitive history ever done on the Lewistown & Reedsville Electric Railway. If you can't find a copy, a condensed version can be found in the Lewistown and the Pennsylvania Railroad book. Click here for the Lewistown & Reedsville Electric Railway page on this site. Much of the information there was gathered from this book. |
