Lewistown and the Pennsylvania Railroad

From Moccasins to Steel Wheels

By the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical & Historical Society

ISBN# 0-9663191-2-5

The title of this book may seem a little misleading. The subtitle is more appropriate since it truly does chronicle the history of travel in Mifflin County, from the earliest residents to the railroad. There are even chapters on the Juniata canal, the Standard Steel company (a manufacturer of railroad wheels) and of air service in Mifflin county.

For those of you interested in The Ol' Hook & Eye, a very condensed version of it can be found as a chapter in this book. Several "new" photos were even found on the KVRR.

A condensed version of Gordon Frederick's book, the Lewistown & Reedsville Electric Railway Co., is also included.

The majority of the book is on the PRR; specifically the Sunbury & Lewistown Branch, Milroy Branch, Denholm Coal Wharf, Hawstone Track Plans, "Lewis" Tower, the Main Line, and Lewistown Junction Station.

The overall design and layout of the book are excellent. There are even color photos and all of the photographs were reproduced in fine detail. The printing was done on matt finish coated paper. Chuck Blardone, the editor, should be commended on putting together a superb book. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the history of the Lewistown area, especially pertaining to the Pennsylvania Railroad.

The book was published in 2000, and can be found in many area bookstores or from the following websites:
